The games that offer real time strategies with contemporary military units are only a few and they are generally unexceptional so you can imagine my excitement for the Wargame series. Red Dragon's timeframe expands from 1975 to 1991 and has over 1600 air/land/naval units from 17 countries. The units have been modeled with realism in mind and they even have fuel and ammo counters that you need to manage during a fight.
Campaign mode might get a bit repetitive because sometimes you play the same map with the same units repeatedly. You can also manage troop compositions and deployment at a strategic level before fights but it's pretty light. Besides the five campaigns you also have multiplayer and skirmish mode. Even though the idea and its implementation are good, the game failed to really engage me.
